What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of facial and neck aging. Dr. Park performs facelifts to reverse the general changes caused by a lifetime of using facial muscles and the pulling of gravity. This can include removing and tightening skin, tightening muscle, and contouring fat.

The face undergoes classic changes during the aging process. I perform facelifts to reverse the general changes caused by a lifetime of using facial muscles and the pulling of gravity. This can include removing and tightening skin, tightening muscle, and contouring fat. – Dr. Frederick K. Park

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Ideal candidates for facelift surgery want to correct conditions such as:

  • Sagging in the middle of the face
  • Nasolabial folds that form along the nose extending to the corners of the mouth
  • Fat that has fallen or disappeared
  • Loss of skin tone in the lower face that creates jowls
  • Appearance of a double chin caused by accumulated fat

One of the common complaints heard is that the skin of the neck is too loose, and the lower cheek area is hanging down, forming jowls. Deep folds where the cheeks meet the lips, called nasolabial folds, are also signs of an aging face. – Dr. Frederick K. Park

Combining Other Procedures With a Facelift

To achieve full-face rejuvenation, Dr. Park may recommend combining your facelift with other facial procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical:

Since a facelift primarily focuses on rejuvenating the lower two-thirds of the face, combining these procedures can comprehensively rejuvenate both the upper and lower face in one personalized treatment plan.

Full Facelift Techniques

With many facelift techniques available, it can be overwhelming to know which is right for you. Dr. Park relies on proven methods, such as SMAS plication and SMASectomy, to deliver natural-looking, long-lasting results. He customizes each surgical plan based on a thorough examination of your skin quality, the degree of aging, and your unique cosmetic goals.

Facelift Technique Comparison

SMAS Plication FaceliftSMASectomy Facelift

Incisions made in front of the earIncisions made along the hairline, around the front of the ear, and behind the ear
Involves folding (plication) and suturing the SMAS layer for tensionRepositions, tightens, and elevates the SMAS layer for more significant lift
Removes excess skin and closes incisionsRemoves excess skin and closes incisions, smoothing wrinkles and folds

What Is a Mini Facelift?

A mini or short-scar facelift is a less extensive technique that usually improves minor sagging on the lower face and upper neck. A mini facelift incision is smaller than a facelift incision, and it’s best for people with early signs of aging and minimal sagging. Dr. Park offers shorter scar options with SMAS plication for patients with mild to moderate sagging in the lower face. A complete facelift is better for those with more extensive skin laxity, jowling, and aging.

I offer shorter scar techniques for patients who require less lifting. Still, I feel that traditional access that extends behind the ear offers the best opportunity to tighten the neck in patients with significant skin laxity. – Dr. Frederick K. Park

What Is a Liquid Facelift?

The combination of BOTOX® and dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®, is sometimes called a liquid facelift or a nonsurgical facelift because it can smooth many types of wrinkles and restore volume to hollowed areas of the face. This approach can help with mild to moderate signs of aging on the face. However, liquid facelifts are temporary and require regular touch-up treatments to maintain a more youthful appearance. They generally cannot address more significant signs of aging.

What Is Facelift Recovery Like?

Most patients can expect the initial recovery period after a facelift to last about 1 to 2 weeks, with continued improvement in swelling and skin tightness over the following weeks and months. While you may feel ready to resume many normal activities relatively quickly, your final results will continue to refine over time.

General recovery milestones include:

  • Swelling and bruising: These are most noticeable during the first 3 to 4 days after surgery and gradually improve over the next few weeks. Mild residual swelling can persist for a few months as your tissues settle.
  • Pain: Discomfort is typically mild to moderate and most noticeable in the first few days. It is usually well controlled with prescribed or over-the-counter medication.
  • Removal of stitches: Sutures are typically removed within 5 to 10 days, depending on how your incisions are healing.
  • Attending social events: Many patients feel comfortable being seen socially within 2 to 3 weeks, though subtle swelling may still be present. For important events, plan your procedure at least 2 to 3 months in advance.
  • Taking off work: Most patients return to non-strenuous work within 1 to 2 weeks. Jobs that require physical exertion may require additional time away.
  • Exercise: Light activity, such as walking, is encouraged early in recovery to support circulation. However, you should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about 4 to 6 weeks.

Every recovery is unique, and following Dr. Park’s postoperative instructions closely will help support a smoother healing process.

Facelift Surgery FAQ

How many years does a facelift take off?

Although each individual has a unique experience, most people feel they look around 10 years younger after facelift surgery.

What’s the best age for a facelift?

Every person ages differently, so there’s no perfect age for facelift surgery. The best time for a facelift is when you decide you’re ready to address signs of aging, such as sagging jowls and wrinkled skin, or when nonsurgical options no longer provide the rejuvenation you want.

Is facelift surgery painful?

You will be given an anesthetic before the surgery so you won’t feel anything during your facelift. We use long-acting anesthetics to minimize post-operative pain and a combination of limited prescription pain medications and NSAIDs for general pain management.

What’s the most natural-looking facelift technique?

The most natural-looking facelift technique depends on your unique anatomy, skin quality, and the specific concerns you want to address. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, Dr. Park tailors the surgical plan to you. During your consultation, he will recommend the approach that best achieves a refreshed, natural appearance without looking overdone.

How long do facelift results last?

Most facelift results last about 8 to 15 years, depending on factors such as skin quality, aging, lifestyle, and sun protection. While a facelift can turn back the clock significantly, it can’t stop the natural aging process.
