What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins occur for many reasons and at different ages. Factors associated with spider veins include:

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal changes
  • Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight fluctuation

Spider veins don’t usually go away on their own. If you are overweight and lose weight, spider veins may diminish, and faint spider veins may disappear. For the most part, you should have a physician treat or remove more prominent spider veins.

Dr. Park’s Approach:

Because spider veins are often red or purple in contrast to lighter skin, they tend to bother many people. We usually treat facial spider veins with a laser. We’ll use either lasers or sclerotherapy injections to remove veins in the legs. These are very effective treatments, and the vessels disappear relatively quickly following the procedure. The most common locations where spider veins occur are the nose, cheeks, and other parts of the face, in addition to the legs. We don’t treat larger varicose veins, which a physician should examine.

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

Dr. Park determines the best treatment option after consulting with you and examining your spider veins. He considers the location and size of the veins when choosing the appropriate treatment. The possibilities include vascular laser, intense pulsed light (IPL), and sclerotherapy. These are effective, safe, and relatively painless methods for reducing spider veins. Patients can combine vein treatments with nonsurgical treatments, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal filler injections.

Vascular Laser

The Diolite® laser we use to treat spider veins targets blood vessels with a laser beam that the vessels absorb. The heat generated by the laser destroys the spider veins without damaging the skin. A laser is typically the best choice for facial spider veins, but he may also treat leg veins with a laser. He also treats pigmented lesions with the vascular laser. You may notice some bruising and redness for several hours after the treatment.

Intense pulsed light treatments target the blood vessels’ red or purple pigment using multiple light beams. As with the vascular laser, the heat directed at the vessels destroys them. The body then absorbs the collapsed blood vessels. The best candidates for treating spider veins with IPL have light or medium-toned skin with smaller blood vessels close to the skin’s surface.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that involves injecting chemicals into the damaged veins. The chemical solution results in the walls of the vein swelling, sticking together, and sealing shut. That stops the blood flow, and the vein gradually fades during the following few weeks. Sclerotherapy is an effective option for leg veins and is less costly than laser or IPL treatments. It is essential to walk around after the procedure to prevent the formation of blood clots in your legs. Most people return to their normal activities on the same day. You’ll also need to wear compression stockings as the veins fade.

It’s easy for qualified patients to finance their procedures through CareCredit®, which offers attractive payment plans for women and men choosing elective cosmetic surgery or nonsurgical treatments.
