What Are the Benefits of Ear Surgery?

Cosmetic ear surgery, also called otoplasty, improves the outer ear’s size, shape, or position by reshaping the cartilage. Dr. Park performs the procedure for adults and children whose ears have stopped growing, which typically occurs by age 5 or 6.

The benefits of ear surgery include:

  • Boosts confidence in your appearance
  • Reduces the prominence of your ears
  • Improves misshaped ears
  • Creates harmony with other facial features
  • Minimal risk of complications
  • Incisions made behind the ear so scarring is hidden

The procedure is especially beneficial for school-aged children who get teased about protruding ears.

Dr. Park’s Approach:

I really enjoy being a plastic surgeon; otoplasty is one of my favorite procedures. Although mostly performed on children, I have performed the surgery on many adults who have always wanted cosmetic ear surgery but never got around to it. One of my patients was in her late 60s and felt very self-conscious about how she looked to people behind her in church. Even at her age, she was thrilled with her newfound confidence. Otoplasty is a gratifying experience, and many patients indicate that it provides them with tremendous peace of mind regarding how they feel others view them.

How Is Otoplasty Performed?

Besides changing the prominence or shape of ears, otoplasty addresses physical changes caused by traumatic injuries to external ears. The most common cosmetic ear surgery technique is called ear pinning.

During ear pinning surgery a small incision, Dr. Park makes an incision behind the ear and removes cartilage and skin. He uses permanent sutures to hold the ears back so they are less prominent. He may also reshape the cartilage during the procedure. Dr. Park uses a general anesthetic for children undergoing ear surgery. A local anesthetic with sedation is an option for adults.

What Is Recovery Like After Ear Surgery?

There is minimal discomfort during recovery. Pediatric patients (and adults, if they have a general anesthetic) wake up in the recovery room after the procedure. You should plan to keep your child home from school for a week after the procedure so the incisions heal properly. Most adult patients can return to non-strenuous jobs within a couple of days of the surgery. Bruising and swelling usually fade after 1 to 2 weeks. Dr. Park recommends that patients wait 2 to 3 weeks before resuming any activities that significantly raise their heart rate.
