Breast Reduction

Women with overly large breasts often suffer from physical pain and emotional stress that significantly impacts the quality of their lives. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frederick K. Park performs breast reduction surgery in Rocky Mount to help women from Greenville, Raleigh, Durham, and other nearby cities feel more comfortable and confident.

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that involves removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. While Dr. Park performs breast lift surgery with similar incision patterns, it only involves removing excess skin.

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction Surgery?

If you experience physical discomfort because of having overly large breasts or want breasts that are more proportional to your body, breast reduction is an excellent solution. Good breast reduction candidates are in good overall health and maintain a stable weight. They also have realistic expectations about the procedure’s results and can take the time necessary to heal.

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

Women who undergo breast reduction surgery are some of our most satisfied patients. The benefits of a successful breast reduction procedure include:

Relief from physical discomfort: Large breasts can cause significant pain. Breast reduction surgery can alleviate issues such as chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain by reducing the weight and size of the breasts.

Improved posture: Heavy and oversized breasts can contribute to poor posture and unnatural spine curvature. By reducing breast size, the surgery can help improve posture and reduce strain on the back and shoulders.

Enhanced physical activity: Women with excessively large breasts may find engaging in physical activities or exercise challenging due to discomfort and restricted movement. Breast reduction surgery can enable individuals to participate more comfortably in sports, exercise, and other physical activities.

Clothing options: Large breasts limit clothing options and make it difficult to find properly fitting bras. Breast reduction surgery creates a more balanced and proportional figure, allowing you to wear a broader range of clothing styles and sizes.

Boost in self-confidence: Some individuals with large breasts feel self-conscious about their appearance.

Improved quality of life: By addressing the physical and emotional discomfort associated with large breasts, breast reduction surgery can improve the overall quality of life.

Dr. Park’s Approach:

“The classic pattern of scarring includes scars around the nipple-areolar complex, a vertical scar on the front of the breast, and a horizontal scar under the breast of various lengths. For the breast reduction patient, these scars tend to be insignificant compared to the improvement in shape and relief of symptoms they enjoy after surgery.”

What Is Breast Reduction Recovery Like?

Breast reduction recovery is like healing after a breast lift. Many women can return to work 1 or 2 weeks after the procedure and resume regular exercise routines in about 4 to 6 weeks. Although your recovery time may vary depending on how complex your procedure is, general recovery milestones include the following:

  • Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising typically peak 3 to 5 days after surgery and gradually diminish over the next few weeks.
  • Pain: You will likely feel mild to moderate pain that peaks within 3 to 5 days. Prescription pain medication helps manage soreness and discomfort.
  • Incisions: We change dressings the day after your surgery and instruct patients to wait a few more days before taking a shower. You should gently pat your incisions dry afterward. Do not bathe or swim until the incisions are fully healed.
  • Surgical bra: You’ll wear a special compression bra around the clock to minimize swelling and support your breasts.
  • Exercise: Walking around the house promotes blood circulation. However, wait 4 to 6 weeks before resuming strenuous and upper body exercises.
  • Breast appearance: Your breasts may appear uneven and swollen initially, but they will gradually take their final shape over the next 6 to 8 weeks.
